Disrupting the Taboo of Geriatric Pregnancy

Cliterati - did you know that if you get pregnant or will deliver your first baby at the age of 35 or older, you are considered a ‘geriatric pregnancy,’ advanced maternal age or more formally, ‘elderly primigravida.’ So as the taboo disruptors we are, we did a little digging and we found some interesting facts.

  • The number of older mothers is growing more rapidly than younger mothers. More women in their 30s having babies now than women in their 20s.

  • "Women with college degrees have children an average of seven years later than those without — and often use the years in between to finish school and build their careers and incomes.”

  • According to a 2019 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Vital Statistics Report, fertility rates for women in all age groups declined between 2017 and 2018 except in the three oldest: 35-39, 40-44 and 45-54 (mostly 45-49, a footnote explains).

  • "First-time mothers are older in big cities and on the coasts, and younger in rural areas and in the Great Plains and the South," according to a 2018 New York Times analysis.

And look, risk factors do increase - fertility is lower than your 20s for men and women, genetic risks like Down’s Syndrome increases (recombination note below), miscarriage increased d/t declining quality in women’s eggs, gestational diabetes, placenta previa, breech positioning of the baby, emergency cesarean delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, preterm birth, low birth weight, and high birth weight and maternal mortality also increases with age.

So we have a mother here today who started having kids at 40 and she has been inspiring women to go for it because she has two beautiful, healthy children. Please welcome Heather Feather Readman!!

“Being a 40 year old mom rocks. I’m more secure in my marriage, my career and myself, and I can devote more time to parenting without feeling like I’m resentful or missing out on life.” - Heather Feather Readman\
